Basil Bazarov (French: Basil Bazaroff) is an opportunistic arms dealer and representative of Korrupt Arms GMBH (Vicking Arms in the French version). He first appears in The Broken Ear.

History[]

Basarov worked to sell weaponry to both the San Theodoran and Nuevo-Rican governments. This was a planned operation in league with R.W. Trickler of the General American Oil company to spark a conflict between the two countries over the El Chapo oil fields.

Origin[]

Basil Bazarov

Bazarov as seen in the book series.

Basarov is closely modelled after the real life armaments magnate and financier, Sir Basil Zaharoff (1849-1936). Zaharoff was infamous in early 20th century Europe for building his fortune off of World War I arms dealing, and for purchasing a British baronetcy.[1] His antics were often covered in Le Crapouillot, a satire magazine Hergé read often.
