Captain Chester (French: Capitaine Chester) is a gruff merchant skipper and an old friend of Captain Haddock.

History[]

Captain Chester first appears in The Shooting Star at the country of Iceland, where he accidentally bumps into Captain Haddock at the docks and both then commence into a bizarre greeting ritual which Tintin at first interprets to be the build-up to a fight. However, the two seafarers then warmly clasp hands and Haddock introduces Chester to Tintin as a long-time friend of his and they then go to a local bar to reminisce with spirits and also let Chester know of their current situation. It is then revealed that Chester is the captain of the Sirius, a merchant trawler, and agrees to secretly use it to refuel Haddock's research vessel the Aurora when their competitors block the fuel supply exclusively from being obtained by the crew apart of the Aurora Expedition. The fuel provided at Iceland flows into the Sirius, and then goes into the Aurora.

Captain Chester is later briefly mentioned in The Secret of the Unicorn, when Haddock gets the idea of barrowing the Sirius from him to aid in the search for Red Rackham's treasure. Chester later lends the Sirius to Haddock so he, Tintin, the Thompsons, and later officially Professor Calculus can go on their search for Red Rackham's Treasure with independent sea travel. Chester is again briefly mentioned in The Seven Crystal Balls when Tintin and Haddock attempt to visit him while he is docked at a port, but he departs before they arrive. He was also one of the many contacts of Haddock who sends him a congratulatory telegram on the misinterpreted news of him and Bianca Castafiore being falsely engaged in The Castafiore Emerald.
