Changes: The Red Sea Sharks

The Red Sea Sharks is the nineteenth title of The Adventures of Tintin. Its original French title is Coke en stock ("coke in stock") a codename used by the villainous antagonists of the story for African slaves.

The Red Sea Sharks is notable for bringing together a large number of characters from previous Tintin adventures, going all the way back to Cigars of the Pharaoh.

Plot

The Red Sea Sharks is about the nation of Khemed, ruled by Emir Mohammed ben Kalish Ezab being taken over by Bab El Ehr and need to hide abroad. The Emir sent his son prince Abdullah to Marlinspike Hall all with a couple of the Emir's men. Captain Haddock does not like Abdullah so he and Tintin set of to find the Emir in Wadesdah, but when they reach the destination, the custom there does not allow them to visit. Tintin was taken back to the plane, where a time bomb was hidden. but luckily there was a fire during the trip and they landed safely. After everyone was out, the bomb exploded and nobody was hurt.

The Captain and Tintin walk to Wadesdah where they can hardly see through the patrol in the city. There they found Tintin's old friend: Oliveira de Figueira who helped Tintin to get to the Emir. They sneak out of the city again and rode to a lost city where they found the Emir. The Emir offered them a boat to go to Meeca and find the man Di Gorgonzola who is later revealed to be Rastapopoulos. On their way a squad of Westland Whirlwind fighter planes attacked them. Tintin shot down one of the Whirlwinds and they made a raft and rescued the pilot who was shot down, his name was Piotr Skut and he befriended Tintin after he saved him.

After floating at sea for a while, Di Gorgonzola's luxury yacht Scheherazade spots them and takes them in at the persuasion of its guests. Not wanting to have Tintin aboard for long, Di Gorgonzola had Tintin and his companions transferred to a freighter called the Ramona manned by Allan Thompson. Initially, Tintin and company received a warm welcome, but they were later locked up in their own room, only to bust through the door with a heavy object after the ship was set on fire intentionally. Allan and his crew, in life rafts, expected the ship to go down in flames but were dismayed that Tintin and company had the flames put out and began sailing away from them. Captain Haddock opens the freighter's hold because he heard people complaining of poor conditions beneath the ship, but was put on the defensive when African slaves mistake him for an oppressor and attack with punches. The whole commotion was ended by Tintin with a water hose, who sprays water at everyone. Tintin realizes that the codeword used by the traffickers, "coke", is actually slaves. Captain Haddock managed to convince the freed slaves that they will have to be sent back home because heading to the ship's intended destination is risky, even though the Africans were heading there for a pilgrimage.

Along the trip, Tintin raises alarm after spotting a submarine's periscope facing their way. Captain Haddock, with Piotr Skut's eyes on the submarine, evades multiple torpedoes fired by the submarine, long enough for Tintin to SOS to a nearby US warship to respond with seaplanes. The submarine was forced to surface after being attacked by the seaplanes' depth charges, and its crew was arrested once the battleship USS Los Angeles arrived. The Los Angeles then took Tintin and companions aboard and then intercepted the Scheherazade on Tintin's advice. Realizing that his cover was blown thanks to the battleship's captain wanting to arrest him, Di Gorgonzola drives a boat from the Scheherazade to the Los Angeles that "sinks" half way and releases his escape submarine, and is thus not seen again for a while. The whole slave trading operation in the Red Sea was halted and the submarine, Di Gorgonzola and Allan are linked by Interpol as active participants in it.

Tintin and company would meet Piotr Skut again in Flight 714.
